Question 1

How do I visit the Algar do Carvão?

Accepted Answer

Algar do Carvão has set opening hours and a small entrance fee. It is located about 15 km from Angra do Heroísmo and is best reached by car or as part of a guided tour. The descent is around 100 steps, and the cave is lit throughout. Temperatures inside are noticeably cooler, so bring a light layer even in summer.

Question 2

What wildlife can I see on a whale watching trip from Terceira?

Accepted Answer

Common and bottlenose dolphins are frequently seen on tours from Angra do Heroísmo. Sperm whales are spotted year-round in the deeper offshore waters. The combined tour to Ilhéus das Cabras adds a snorkelling stop in the marine reserve surrounding the islet, where fish and marine invertebrate diversity is high.

Question 3

What is the Tourada à Corda?

Accepted Answer

The Tourada à Corda is a uniquely Azorean form of bullfighting in which the bull is guided on a long rope by a team of handlers called pastores. The animal is not harmed or killed — it is returned to the pasture after the event. The tradition dates back centuries and takes place in village streets across Terceira from late May through September.

Question 4

Is Terceira worth visiting for just 2–3 days?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. In two or three days you can cover the Angra do Heroísmo historic centre, Algar do Carvão, a whale watching trip, and the Biscoitos pools. Terceira is smaller than São Miguel and the main sights are concentrated enough to visit at a comfortable pace without rushing. It works very well as a multi-island add-on.
