Corvo, the smallest island in the Azores, has a single village, Vila do Corvo, and on 15 August it celebrates its patron saint, Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, Our Lady of Miracles. The regional tourism board's guide to religious traditions calls these the largest celebrations on the island. In 2027 the feast falls on a Sunday.

Faith and music

The day combines religious ceremonies in the 18th-century church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres with dancing in the village, as Visit Azores describes. Wrapped around it is the Festival dos Moinhos, the Windmill Festival. For a couple of days Corvo's own brass band plays alongside bands that travel over from other islands, which on an island this small makes for a lively few days.

Planning a visit

Corvo lies about 18 km from Flores. Atlânticoline runs a passenger link with Flores, and the island's small airport has SATA Air Açores flights, but both boats and planes are cancelled when the weather turns. Book your bed and your crossing early, and keep a spare day before any onward connection. The exact programme of Masses, processions and concerts is announced locally each summer.

Local tip

Pack a warm, windproof layer: the celebrations carry on into the evening, and Corvo can be cool and breezy even in August.
