The Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is a strip of flat land and a lagoon tucked under the cliffs of São Jorge, in the parish of Ribeira Seca, Calheta. Its small sanctuary, built between 1832 and 1835, is dedicated to the Senhor Santo Cristo da Caldeira, and once a year the fajã fills up for his feast.
When it falls in 2027
According to Visit Azores, the feast is always held on the first weekend of September, with its high point on the Sunday. In 2027 that means Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September.
What happens
Sunday's procession in honour of the Senhor Santo Cristo is followed by Holy Spirit soup served to everyone present, in the generous Azorean way. In the past, devotees walked to the fajã from wherever they lived on the island to keep promises; a few still make the journey on foot today. Alongside the religious side there is a festive one, with live music.
Getting there
The classic way in is on foot. The PR01SJO trail, about 10 km long, drops from the wind farm on the Serra do Topo past the sanctuary and on to Fajã dos Cubres. Wear proper boots, as some sections are slippery, and carry water. While you are there, look out over the lagoon, a protected landscape known for its clams.
If you walk in on the Sunday, set off early so you reach the sanctuary in time for the procession, and arrange your transport back from Fajã dos Cubres before you start.
