You can see a good part of São Miguel without a car. The island has a public bus network reaching from Ponta Delgada to Ribeira Grande, Furnas, Povoação, Nordeste and Sete Cidades. It is built around residents' daily journeys, though, so the trick is planning around its timetables rather than expecting a bus every few minutes.
AzoresBus: the island network since September 2026
On 1 September 2026 a new public bus system started on São Miguel under a ten-year concession, with a fleet of new vehicles. It runs under the name AzoresBus and is operated by Vale do Ave Açores. If an older guide or forum post sends you to a different bus company's timetable, it is out of date: check azoresbus.pt instead.
Lines visitors use most
Every line has its own downloadable timetable on the AzoresBus schedules page. When we checked in October 2026, these were the ones most useful for sightseeing from Ponta Delgada:
- 110 Ponta Delgada – Furnas, and 317 Furnas – Ribeira Quente
- 205, 206 and 208 Ponta Delgada – Sete Cidades, on different routes (206 goes via Mosteiros)
- 102 and 103 Ponta Delgada – Ribeira Grande (via Rabo de Peixe or via Pico do Fogo)
- 311 Ponta Delgada – Lagoa and 315 Ponta Delgada – Vila Franca do Campo
- 105 Ponta Delgada – Nordeste and 318 Ponta Delgada – Povoação
- E01 Nordeste – Ponta Delgada and E02 Povoação – Ponta Delgada, both via Ribeira Grande
Lines do not all run every day, and some have only a few departures, so read the timetable for the day you plan to travel, including the last bus back. The live map and the AzoresBus app (Android and iOS) show routes, stops and where buses are in real time.
Tickets and cards
For an occasional trip, buy a single ticket from the driver as you board. If you will ride often, AzoresBus sells monthly passes and pre-paid trips loaded onto a rechargeable contactless card at its points of sale, listed on the website and in the app. Card users must validate every time they board, including when changing bus. Children under four travel free as long as they do not take a seat. Current fares are on the official site.
Getting around Ponta Delgada
Inside the city, Ponta Delgada runs its own Mini Bus network of small buses, organised by the municipality. The city's official PDL MiniBus app shows the routes and stops, live bus positions, waiting times and where to buy tickets. The historic centre is compact, so for short hops walking is often just as quick.
Download the AzoresBus timetable PDF for your line before you set off and save it on your phone. That way you can check it offline, and a day trip to Sete Cidades or Furnas depends on catching the return bus.
When a bus is not enough
Many trailheads, viewpoints and hot springs are a walk from the nearest stop, and early-morning or evening activities can fall outside bus hours. For those, combine the bus with a taxi, book an activity that includes pick-up, or hire a car for a day or two. Questions about a route? AzoresBus customer support answers by phone, e-mail and WhatsApp (details on azoresbus.pt).
