The island of fajãs

São Jorge is one of the most dramatic islands in the Azores: a long volcanic ridge rising sharply from the Atlantic, with sheer green cliffs falling towards secluded fajãs, small coastal plains formed by lava flows and landslides. Walk hydrangea-lined trails, descend towards isolated communities, swim in natural volcanic pools and discover landscapes where mountains, farmland and ocean are always within sight.

Velas is the main town, with a harbour and a historic centre, and the island's airport (SJZ) lies nearby; inter-island ferries also link São Jorge with neighbouring islands such as Pico and Faial. On the north coast, one of the island's best-known trails drops through the cliffs to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and its lagoon, while Fajã dos Cubres adds wetlands and small settlements below the sea cliffs. Along the volcanic spine, Pico da Esperança, the island's highest point, looks out across the Central Group.

Plan your visit

  • When to visit

    Summer brings longer, sunnier days and excellent hiking conditions. Spring and autumn are quieter and beautifully green, but São Jorge's weather can change quickly at any time of year.

  • Getting here

    Fly into São Jorge Airport (SJZ) near Velas or arrive by inter-island ferry from neighbouring islands such as Pico and Faial.

  • Getting around

    A rental car gives you the most flexibility. Some fajãs and hiking routes are best explored on foot or with a local guide.

  • Where to stay

    Choose Velas for convenience and restaurants, or stay in a rural guesthouse for quieter evenings surrounded by São Jorge's landscapes.

Allow at least three full days to experience the island without rushing. Four days gives you more flexibility for longer hikes, changing weather and exploring both the north and south coasts.
