The Festas do Espírito Santo, the Holy Spirit festivals, are the heart of popular faith in the Azores, and Terceira celebrates them with special flair. Almost every parish has its império, a small, brightly painted building that holds the crown, sceptre and banner of the Holy Spirit.
When
Preparations begin after Easter, and the feasts themselves take place between Pentecost (Whit Sunday) and Trinity Sunday, as the Visit Azores religious tourism guide explains. In 2027 that is from Sunday 16 May to Sunday 23 May. Some parishes hold their own feasts at other times of year, so you may come across one later in the summer.
What happens
Each feast is run by a brotherhood. The key rituals are the crowning of the imperador and the sharing of food and drink with the whole community, and with anyone passing by. Expect sopas do Espírito Santo, meat and vegetable broth poured over bread and scented with mint, along with sweet bread (massa sovada), rice pudding and local red wine. The devotion came with the first settlers and the Franciscans, and its spirit of equality and sharing is still very much alive.
Practical notes
Everyone is welcome. Follow the crowds to the império on the feast day, accept what you are offered with thanks, and be patient with roads closed for processions.
If you are offered a bowl of sopas, accept it with thanks. Sharing food with strangers is the whole point of the feast.
