Faial keeps the Holy Ghost festivals like every Azorean island, but its biggest religious celebration belongs to Nossa Senhora das Angústias, Our Lady of Sorrows. On the feast day a procession and popular celebrations fill the streets of Horta, as described by Visit Azores. The devotion goes back to the island's settlement, when a statue of Our Lady was brought from Flanders.

When it falls in 2027

The feast has no fixed calendar date. It is held on the sixth Sunday after Easter, a rule given both on the Faial page and in the regional tourism board's guide to religious traditions. Easter 2027 is on 28 March, so the celebration falls on Sunday, 9 May 2027.

What to expect

This is a living parish feast, not a staged show. The religious heart of the day is the procession through Horta's streets, and the same brochure notes that it draws believers from several islands. Around it, the popular side of the festa spills into the streets of the town. Detailed timings, including the procession route, are announced locally closer to the date, so check with the parish or the tourist office once you arrive.

Be respectful during the procession: keep the route clear, stay quiet as the image passes and ask before photographing people up close.

Local tip

Pico is only a short ferry crossing from Horta, so the feast fits neatly into a trip that takes in both islands. Book your bed early for the weekend.
