The island of São Miguel is named after the archangel Michael, and Vila Franca do Campo, on the south coast, keeps his feast with particular devotion. The celebration was brought by the first settlers and honours both the island's patron saint and the patron saints of the trades and professions, according to the Visit Azores religious tourism guide.

When

The feast is held on the Sunday closest to 8 May. In 2027, 8 May is a Saturday, so the festival day is Sunday 9 May 2027, one week after the Senhor Santo Cristo procession in Ponta Delgada.

What to expect

The day centres on the parish church of São Miguel Arcanjo, a dark basalt building in the heart of the town. As with most Azorean feasts, the religious celebrations are open to everyone and free, and the parish sets the exact times in its own programme closer to the date.

Making a day of it

Vila Franca do Campo sits by the sea on São Miguel's south coast, a short drive east of Ponta Delgada, so the feast fits easily into a day of exploring the island.

Local tip

Combine the feast with the Santo Cristo weekend a week earlier and you will see two very different faces of São Miguel's religious life.
