Four days is enough to see the big names on São Miguel without spending every waking hour in the car. The plan below gives each day one area of the island, so you drive less and linger more. Keep it flexible: the weather on the high ground can be completely different from the coast, so swap days around when the crater lakes are hidden in cloud.
Day 1: Ponta Delgada and a morning at sea
Start in the island's main city. Walk to the Portas da Cidade, the three-arched baroque gateway from 1783 that once opened onto the old dock, then along the seafront to the Forte de São Brás, a 16th-century fortress that houses the Military Museum of the Azores.
Mornings are a good time for a whale-watching trip. The Azores are one of the world's great whale sanctuaries, with more than 20 kinds of cetaceans recorded, and Visit Azores lists the licensed São Miguel operators, several of which run half-day trips from Ponta Delgada. In the afternoon, visit the Augusto Arruda pineapple greenhouses, the oldest in the archipelago, where a single fruit takes around 18 months to ripen.
Day 2: Sete Cidades and Ponta da Ferraria
Head west into the Sete Cidades massif. The Miradouro da Vista do Rei, at 656 m, looks down on the Blue and Green Lakes and is named after the 1901 visit of King Carlos I and Queen Amélia. It has a car park and toilets. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades is the largest lake in the Azores and a protected Ramsar wetland, so drive down to the village and walk along the shore.
On the way back, drop down to Ponta da Ferraria, a natural monument where a hot spring meets the Atlantic in a rocky sea pool. It is most pleasant around low tide and only sensible when the sea is calm.
Day 3: Lagoa do Fogo, Caldeira Velha and the tea coast
The Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint sits at 776 m above a lake that is classified as a nature reserve. Plan ahead if you come in high season. In 2026 a hop-on, hop-off shuttle runs from 1 August to 30 September and during the Easter school holidays. While it runs, the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is closed to most private and rental cars. Tickets are sold on lagoadofogo.pt, and the stops include the Bela Vista, Lagoa do Fogo and Pico da Barrosa viewpoints.
Below the lake on the north side, Caldeira Velha is a natural monument with warm, iron-rich pools under a waterfall. Entry is by timed slot with a visitor limit, and online tickets must be bought by the day before, so book early. Finish on the north coast at the Gorreana tea factory, founded in 1883 and still working with its 19th-century machinery, or at nearby Chá Porto Formoso, which has guided tours and a tea room.
Day 4: Furnas and the Nordeste coast
Get to Furnas early. On the northern shore of the Lagoa das Furnas, the fumarolic field steams at close to boiling point. Pots of cozido das Furnas are lowered into the ground there to cook slowly in volcanic heat. The area is run by the Povoação municipality, and non-residents pay a small visiting fee. Order the cozido for lunch in the village.
Then take your pick of warm water. Terra Nostra Park is a botanical garden founded in 1780 with a large iron-rich thermal pool at 35–40 °C. Poça da Dona Beija is smaller, with five pools averaging about 39 °C. If you still have energy, continue east to Nordeste for the Ponta do Sossego viewpoint, which looks out over a rugged, steep coastline.
Iron-rich thermal water stains light-coloured swimwear orange for good. Bring an old, dark swimsuit for Terra Nostra, Dona Beija and Caldeira Velha.
Getting around and pacing
A hire car gives you the most freedom for this plan; our guides to hiring a car and to the buses on São Miguel cover both options. Opening hours and prices change by season, so check each official page the day before. Leave one slot free for a second try at whichever crater lake was in cloud.
