On the green western tip of Terceira, the village of Serreta is home to the Diocesan Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, Our Lady of Miracles, the most important Marian shrine in the Azores. Each September it draws the island's largest pilgrimage.
When
The feast falls on the second weekend of September, as the Visit Azores religious tourism guide explains. Pilgrims walk to Serreta on the Friday and Saturday, the main feast is on Sunday and the celebrations end on Monday. In 2027 that means Friday 10 to Monday 13 September, with the feast day on Sunday 12 September.
What happens
The devotion dates back to the end of the 16th century. Legend tells of a priest who withdrew from the world to live as a hermit and built a small chapel for an image of Our Lady that he had brought with him. Today thousands of believers make their way to Serreta to fulfil promises and pray at the church.
Practical notes
Roads on the west of the island are busy with walkers on the Friday and Saturday, so drive slowly and give them space, especially after dark. Serreta is a small village, so expect parking to be tight close to the church.
Arrive early on the Sunday. The village is small, and the best moments come before the crowds peak.
