Every Sunday from 1 to 29 November 2026, seven restaurants in Nordeste, São Miguel, cook the slow-roasted capon the municipality is known for. Book ahead.

Updated 28 October 2026In November the municipality of Nordeste, on the far eastern tip of São Miguel, turns its Sundays over to the galo-capão, a castrated rooster raised slowly and cooked for hours. The 2026 edition of the Mês do Capão runs from 1 to 29 November, and the dish is served on Sundays only.
Where to eat it
Seven restaurants take part, spread across the municipality:
- Vila do Nordeste: Restaurante Tronqueira, Tasca do Costa, The Lince Nordeste and Vila Snack Bar.
- Lomba da Fazenda: Casa de Pasto Cardoso.
- Achadinha: Restaurante Poço Azul and Os Melos Restaurante.
Booking
The capon takes a long time to prepare, so the restaurants ask you to book well in advance. Their phone numbers are on the Câmara do Nordeste page. Prices are set by each restaurant.
