The loop starts near the access road to Cabeço Verde and drops through the woods to Furna Ruim, a 55 m-deep lava cave worth viewing with caution, before skirting Algar do Caldeirão. Descending further through laurel forest - Azores laurel, Azorean holly and heather - the path crosses a lapilli gravel road and climbs a staircase to Cabeço do Canto, circling the cone with views of the Capelinhos volcano.
The return follows the same route around a second cone before closing the loop; from the start, it's worth the short extra walk up the access road to Cabeço Verde for a wider view over Praia do Norte, Cabeço do Fogo, Morro do Castelo Branco and the volcanic cones out to Capelinhos.
At only 2.5 km but about 240 m of climb packed into that distance, this short loop takes around two hours thanks to the staircase and steady grade.
