Entre Montes
A short loop between two headlands in Horta, past historic fortifications and the Dabney family's legacy.
The walk starts at the car park by Porto Pim beach, passing the Azores Sea Observatory on the way up to the Lira viewpoint, which looks across the bay to the fortress of São Sebastião. The shoreline here, known as Porto Pim, Safe Harbour, is lined with 16th- and 17th-century fortifications, and the path continues past the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia toward Monte da Guia, with the underwater crater of Caldeirinhas below on one side.
Turning north with the beach in view, the route passes the Porto Pim Aquarium and the house of the Dabney family, who lived here from 1806 to 1894 and left a building legacy later restored by the island's natural park. From the beach the path crosses into Monte Queimado, a volcano of land origin, and climbs to its summit for a view over Horta's marina before returning to the car park.
At 3.4 km with about 230 m of climb, this is an easy loop of around an hour and a half between the two headlands.
